Experience Sarasota: Clasico

Experience Sarasota: Clasico

On the corner of Main Street and Palm Avenue, there is an air of magic. The lights twinkle and ivy climbs the walls of a beautiful old building surrounded by cozy outdoor seating. This is Clasico. It’s not Italian, it’s not Spanish, it is classy and classic. An American melting pot of cuisine, a very impressive bar and a place to feel at home.

It’s not Italian, it’s not Spanish, it is classy and classic. An American melting pot of cuisine, a very impressive bar and a place to feel at home.

“It’s not our restaurant, it’s theirs, it is the peoples of Sarasota.” Garrett Roberts, General Manager.

Originally on this corner sat an iconic bookstore, a Sarasota meeting place where people could mingle, catch up, make new friends, visit with old friends or play tourist. When the bookstore closed down a small group of people with a vision wanted to continue the legacy of the meeting place and in so doing they created Clasico.

“The chance to do business on this corner is an honor. To meet the people that we meet here, this corner is iconic; pillars of the community, locals and tourists, they all meet here.”   Raff Aele, Co-Owner.

It was a Thursday evening when I went to experience Clasico. The ambience was inviting; soft lighting, candles, the sound of people chatting and laughing, smooth French café type music playing and a vibe that made me want to be there. Although classy and sophisticated, this place has been designed for everyone; a family dinner, a date night, a spot for one at the bar, old folks, young folks all are welcome at this meeting place.

Clasico is known for it’s impeccable bar, with rows of glinting glass bottles, whatever you are looking for they are sure to have it. Clasico sports one of the most extensive whisky collections in Sarasota and a broad and affordable wine selection. What is still relatively undiscovered though, is the quality and value of food available here.

I had the pleasure of meeting Guillaume Dupont, the exquisite head chef, he is: French, full of surprises and abounding in talent. Beef Bourguignon, Guillaume’s chicken pot pie, pan seared rare tuna and top sirloin steak are a few of the delectable options for entrees. Not to mention a list of sandwiches, salads and even kids plates for around $6.

“The food here is fresh, locally sourced and organic if we can… farm to fork… and fresh fish brought in daily” Raff Aele.

I sat at the bar absorbing my surroundings and talking with two friendly locals sat next to me. I spotted two of my favorite words on a chalk board ‘happy hour, what perfect timing! Clasico happy hour menu runs everyday from 4-7pm. $5 appetizers, $3 well cocktails, $4 mojitos, $5 for any glass of wine on the wine list! Even whisky flights are available to make it an extra happy hour.

I ordered lobster risotto, pork tacos and a glass of red. I have to say I haven’t dined alone much but as I sat at the bar chatting to new acquaintances, waiting for my food and sipping on my sumptuous glass of wine I found myself having a really great time. Clasico was so comfortable, relaxing and friendly.

My appetizers arrived, they were beautifully plated and generously sized. The pork tacos were delicious but the lobster risotto was seriously amazing! Cheesy lobster deliciousness, absolutely highly recommended!

Clasico is open for lunch and dinner, they open at 11.30am and serve their full menu until an impressive 1.30am. They often have live acoustic music, you can keep up to date with live features on their website.

A date night, catch up with friends, business meeting, a table for one, time with family or a place to meet new acquaintances, Clasico really is the place to go. Fast forward into the late evening and I hear this place can become the place to party especially on the weekends.

So SDAY readers, get yourself to Clasico and experience for yourself, the classic meeting place of Sarasota.
